The School District

The Pulaski Academy and Central School District is located near Interstate Route 81, halfway between Syracuse and Watertown.  The school system currently serves a student population of over 1,200 students. The Lura M. Sharp Elementary School enrolls approximately 600 students in Pre-K through Grade 5, while the newly reorganized Middle - Senior High School has 640 students in grades 6- 12.

The staff currently includes a Superintendent, Business Manager, ElementarySchool Principal, Middle School Principal, High School Principal, Five Department Chairs, 98 teachers and 99 support personnel.

The district completed three building projects in the late 1990's.   Renovations were done at the Lura Sharp Elementary School and a new community playground was constructed. The Junior - Senior High School was renovated, received a 10 classroom Jr. High wing, and a new outdoor track and field facility was constructed. A new bus garage was also built.

In 2005 - 2007 another capital project was undertaken. A Middle School addition was added to what was previously the Jr/Sr High School, a new Library / Media Center was built, a new High School Gymnasium was constructed, and repairs and renovations - both interior & exterior - were completed at both buildings. As a result, the district facilities are in excellent condition both in appearance and infrastructure.

Program Highlights

The district has a strong academic program supporting both students preparing to continue their studies in college as well as students preparing to enter occupational work immediately following their graduation from high school.  The Board of Education and the professional staff believe that the best outcomes for students can be achieved by pursuing the beliefs of cooperation, high expectations, trust, success, flexibility, active learning, dynamic attitudes and proactive methods.

The intention of the district is to provide students with an education which leads to high self-esteem, self-direction as a learner, respect for themselves and others and the acquiring of a broad knowledge base while attaining the necessary process skills to be successful.  Candidates should be committed to these students.

The Pulaski District is involved with many Oswego County BOCES services.  The Oswego County Teacher Center and the Oswego BOCES Division of Instructional Support Services provide numerous in-service opportunities.  The school district maintains a close association with the State University College at Oswego, with the district providing graduate courses and guidance to the teachers.

The Area and the Community

The Village of Pulaski is the hub of the Pulaski community, which is circled by the hamlets of Fernwood, Port Ontario and Richland.  Each of these population centers has churches and business establishments serving the people in the area.  The Village of Pulaski has a population of 2,700 and there is considerable construction of new family homes.  It attracts retirees who wish to live in a small town atmosphere and young adults who wish to raise their families in the wholesomeness of a rural community.  The cost of living is moderate and homes are affordable.

The largest single employer in the district is a boiler factory.  There are also a number of smaller employers and businesses which provide employment for many local families.

The location of Pulaski makes it an attractive home for those who commute to Syracuse, Oswego, Fulton and Watertown.  Institutions of higher learning are also located in these areas.

For a small rural community, Pulaski has something to offer everyone year-round.   Cultural opportunities are found in the easily accessible cities and in the community.  Outdoor activities of all types abound in the village or nearby.

The title of Salmon Capital is not just a publicity stunt, as witnessed by the thousands of fishermen drawn to local streams and rivers in the fall.  Others are attracted to the area to camp, snowmobile and ski.
